4 Fun Things to Do in Chengdu, China

1.Visit the Chengdu Panda Breeding Center

Giant Pandas are only found in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces and there are fewer than 1000 in total. The Chengdu Panda Breeding Center, located just 6 miles from downtown Chengdu, provides a habitat similar to that which pandas experience in the wild and gives them the best possible environment for breeding.  The main purpose of the breeding center is to increase numbers of pandas and to reintroduce some to the wild.  It’s a fantastic, not to mention rare, opportunity to have a close encounter with both Giant Pandas and Red Pandas (which, incidentally, look more like raccoons than pandas). It may even be possible to hold a baby panda!

2. Take a Day Trip to the Grand Buddha in Leshan

The largest carved stone Buddha in the world! At an amazing 233 feet (71m) tall, the statue depicts a seated Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It’s such an impressive sight – his smallest toenail is large enough to easily accommodate a seated person. Amazing!

3. See Sichuan Opera

Sichuan opera is a type of Chinese opera that originated in China’s Sichuan province around 1700.
Performances are more modern and relaxed than Beijing opera, and can be described more like a play or variety show as they often include puppetry, acrobatics and fire-breathing. A classic Chendu activity. Not to be missed.

Renown the world over, Sichuan cuisine is known for it’s bold flavors and spiciness. But despite this reputation, only a small portion of the food is spicy. Chengdu is a such a great destination for foodies. In 2011 UNESCO declared Chengdu a city of Gastronomy, so what better place to learn about Sichuan cooking.
