Things To Do In Banff – Top 5 for Winter

Things to Do in Banff - Winter

There are so many fun things to do in Banff that it’s sometimes difficult to know where to start. That’s why I’ve created 2  lists of my top 5 Banff activities (there’s another one for summer). I hope they’re useful!

Apart from the obvious winter activities like snowboarding and skiing there are loads of other great things that you wouldn’t necessarily think of.

1 – Dog sledding

banff-dogsledding-15Dog sledding through the Canadian Wilderness is simply amazing – a must-do activity for any visit to the Canadian Rockies.

The dogs love to run and you’ll have great fun either snuggled up in the sled or even mushing yourself.

On top of all this the dogs are very lovable!

2 – Go to an NHL Ice Hockey Game

banff-ice-hockey-10Ice Hockey is Canada’s national sport and it’s a REALLY exciting game! If you’ve never been, now’s your chance.

You really don’t need to be a sports fan to enjoy it, and it’s suitable for children too.

Tours leave from Banff to watch the Calgary Flames at all their home games.

3 – Johnston Canyon Ice Walk

banff-icewalk-10This might sound a bit strange but it’s actually quite fascinating. In summer the trail to Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular walks in the area and has some lovely waterfalls.

In winter it completely freezes over and the waterfalls turn to beautiful columns of ice. It’s really quite magnificent. You’ll need ice cleats and walking poles in order to walk safely on the ice, but tours provide these.

4 – Snowmobiling

banff-snowmobiling-12Also known as skidooing, snowmachining or sledding, snowmobiling isn’t just for thrill-seekers. Many tours are geared towards visitors to Canada, most of whom have absolutely no previous experience. It’s also a great way to enjoy the outdoors without too much physical effort! You’ll get to experience some spectacular scenery and places that are difficult to reach by other means of transport. It’s great fun too!

5 – Snowshoeing

Banff SnowshoeingSnowshoeing is another great activity to try while in Canada. Don’t worry if the only time you’ve seen snowshoes they looked like tennis rackets – they’ve moved on a lot since then. If you like walking in the summer then you should love snowshoeing.

Being surrounded by snow means it’s very quiet and peaceful and the landscape takes on a magical feeling in the winter. There are plenty of easy trails (e.g. Paint Pots) and you may even spot a snowshoe hare.
